Ryan McGinley is definitely one of my favourite photographers of all time. Despite his young age, his surreal yet honest portrayal of youth exceeds the tender minds of people his age. He is absolute proof that age is not a factor when it comes to success in the art/photography industry.
When he was a 19 year old student at Parson's School of Design, he put together a small book consisting of 50 photographs titled "The Kids Are Alright". The book showed his friends doing drugs, sex, dancing, hanging out, vomiting, skateboarding, tagging. He sent them out to hundreds of magazine editors and well-known photographers. He was immediately offered an assignment in Berlin by Index magazine's editor who was very much impressed by his book. He went on to receive assignments from magazines like Vice, Butt, Dazed and Confused and The Fader. Later on, he started shooting for the New York Times Magazine, and did advertising work for Puma, Nike, Verizon and other corporations. McGinley also worked with artiste like Kate Moss and Sigur Ros. At age 25, he became the youngest photographer to host a solo exhibition at the Whitney museum.
He was everywhere and he was the gem of photography industry.
