Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo ( July 6, 1907 - July 13, 1954), was a Mexican painter born in Coyoacán. She was well known for her self portraits that reflects pain and passion through the intensity and vibrancy of the colours used. Her work is symbolic of national and indigenous traditions in Mexico. Traditional Mexican and Amerindian cultural symbols are very prominent in her paintings and as such, her work is often categorise as folk art.
Frida said that " I have suffered two grave accidents in my life... One in which a street car knocked me down and the other was Diego."
The car accident that occurred when she was 18, had her bedridden for over a year and made her went through more than 30 operations.
Diego Rivera was her husband which she tied the knot with when she was 22. He was a famous Mexican muralist, 20 years older than her. Their problematic yet passionate relationship survived career pressures, infidelities, divorce, remarriage, Frida's bisexuality and her inability to have children.
The streetcar accident destroyed her physically and the relationship with Diego crushed her emotionally.
When asked about her many self portraits, Frida's answer was " because I am so often alone...because I am the subject I know best."
